I graduated this past week from CalArts! Woo! I've been thinking about starting a new blog and posting there instead as I begin this new chapter in my life. These were done in Photoshop using a mouse. Thanks for looking.

2012 Character Animation Show

 

These are the pieces I did for this years Character Animation Gallery show that went on last week here at CalArts. The last one was a collaborative effort between me and the super talented Louis Thomas. He drew the very attractive young lady, and I went in afterwards and drew the guy character. A page from the sketch book. Usually when I draw in my sketch book it's a cluster of different ideas on one page, but recently I've been trying to do a couple drawings of one character or idea.

Playing around with textures, trying to undigitize this stuff. Undigitize isn't a word.

Here's a fun drawing I did for character design class. The assignment was to design a character inspired by a song of our choice. I went with Roxanne by The Police. Phil comes up with the best assignments!

Some runny snot fell onto this drawing, I hope I'm not getting sick.

Some more life drawing from Rad's class. These were really quick 1 minute gestures and Rad wanted us to get as far away from what the model actually looks like as possible. We used the model as a guide to draw our own design in a specific pose. The design my drawings evolved into reminds me of Clem from Chris Blain's "Gus". Check him out if you haven't!

They like to get rowdy.

Here's some gesture drawings from Rad's life drawing class. He wanted us to focus on the rhythms of the drawing, so I started each pose with a simple line of action. Next time I'll try drawing some faces.

Here's the character design assignment from this week. The assignment was to design a Prince, Princess, and Villain using either a circle, square, or triangle to define each character.

School's started again, this last year at CalArts is definitely going to be bittersweet. This is the first assignment from Phil's character design class, where we had to design ourselves. I drew 3 year old me.
